Biography of Michael (Mike) A Cowell

Mike Cowell, a Civil Engineering honours graduate and MBA, has recently joined Shwe Taung Building Materials as its CEO. He has had over 20 years of senior Board experience in Building Materials companies in UK, Asia and Australia.

Mike is passionate about the growth, development and welfare of the people that work for him. Therefore, Safety is his priority and he will work tirelessly to promote an environment of ZERO HARM. 

Mike says, “I believe we want to create an environment where everyone enjoys coming to work and feels safe, valued and included. My expectation is that anyone who works with or for Shwe Taung BM behaves in accordance with our values and treats people with fairness, dignity and respect. This includes respecting other’s differences and encouraging inclusion.”

Prior to joining Shwe Taung Mike was the Managing Director of the Concrite Ready mix company, a subsidiary of Boral in Australia, supplying around 10% of Readymix concrete in Sydney, NSW.

Previously he was the COO of Hope Construction Materials in the UK, a privately owned business supplying approximately 15% of Great Britain’s Cement and Concrete consumption and 5-6% of its Aggregates. 

This followed 5 years as the Managing Director of Lafarge Surma Cement Ltd, Lafarge’s Bangladesh cement Business.

Before that he worked in the Lafarge Cement UK Executive as the Supply and Distribution Director where he was responsible for all aspects of Purchasing, and Logistics. This followed on from his role, as the Plant Manager of Blue Circle’s Westbury Cement Works, that later became the Lafarge Westbury cement works, when Blue Circle was acquired by Lafarge in 2001.

Mike’s previous experience has been in Commercial and Operational management, predominantly in steel based construction products where he has acted both in senior management and consultancy roles after initially starting his career as a Civil Engineer.
